[How-to] Reset Mac OSX Password

Postby Sam » Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:33 am

We needed to reset a users password on OSX. We found a solution using single user mode - here's how:

1. Boot into single user mode (by pressing Command-S at startup)

2. At the <i>root</i> prompt, run a check disk with
Code: Select all
# fsck -fy

3. Mount the partitions/slices:
Code: Select all
# mount -uw /

4. Load directory services support
Code: Select all
# launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist

5. Reset the users password (replacing username with the targeted user and password):
Code: Select all
dscl . -passwd /Users/username password

6. Reboot
